Week 1 saw the start of a level of intensity that I have never experienced before, in my life. From the academic and orientation programs, through to the social aspects, each day was quite full and intense and put you in close contact with people, who by the end of the week would become family.
100 hours! This is the amount of time I spent with my cluster during the first week. This is the group of 70 people that I will work with over the next year in all my core classes. Some past student go as far as to say that you'll call them family... Some past students don't! I'm sure in 2 years from now, I'll have made up my mind. In any company, club or group, it takes some time to form bonds with the other members. Normally, this can take some time. Here, however, the intensity of the week's activities accelerated the process. By the end of the week, there was definitely a strong feeling of comeraderie. The orientation itself, didn't appear to be anything unusual. It had a small number of team-building activities, a huge assortment of speakers on various topics to help orient ourselves and various social events, ranging from the relatively-civilised, through to the ungainly! Distinctly novel, was our assignment of Peer Advisers (PAs). As current 2nd year students, these mentors provided our cluster with all sorts of varied advice. We had quite a variety of PAs, from overly-excitable to downright-cynical and that made from some quite refreshing insights in what we had ahead of us. It wouldn't suprise me if it was these PAs who helped foster the unity within our cluster so quickly. Well, it's the end of 1 week and I'm completely and utterly exhausted. Although I'm on the older side of the average age, I can still show those "young-uns" how to hold-up! But for now... I think I'll just take a little nap! |
