Two of the great things that I've discovered about Columbia is:

  1. They provide a lot of a information on an admitted student's site page
  2. You are provided a login immediately after you accept your offer

 So why are these important?

Two of the great things that I've discovered about Columbia is:

  1. They provide a lot of a information on an admitted student's site page
  2. You are provided a login immediately after you accept your offer

 So why are these important?

Lots of information!

When I was first admitted, I was provided with a pack of information, plus a selection of web sites.  When I added all the information together, I believe it comes to about 200+ pages worth of information.  Now that is a lot of information to digest and until you go through it all, it's difficult to work out what's important for when.  So this is where the admitted student' site comes into play.  There is an all-important to-do list.  This helps you focus on what to do and by when.  There are also shortcuts to the other web sites.  Another innovation they have going on is a "Virtual Peer Advisors" site which is actually a wiki setup by current students that contains more useful tid-bits.  Together, they help make your life easier, particularly being an international student.

Lots and lots of information!

The second thing you have is a login to Columbia University sites, such as the library, mailing lists, student directories and more.  This comes in really handy, because you can get onto the mailing lists early, check out the core courses and how to exempt out of the them and even start looking at electives.  It may be a little early to start looking at it, but it's better now than when you first arrive and have so many other things to worry about (like food and shelter :)

So, in short, I'd have to say while having so much information can be quite daunting, we've been given the tools to be able to look at as little or as much information as we need.  One way to look at it, is that when you're applying for an MBA, you need to manage your yourself and plan accordingly, whereas once accepted, the admissions office makes the plan for you and helps guide you through it.
