When I first wrote in April that Facebook lacked the ability to update status via SMS, Facebook came to the party and decided to implement that feature. While it's now been active for a little while, many people are still unaware of how to use it. Here I run through the simple steps on how to get it going.
Back in April, I wrote about the lack of status updates via SMS facility in Facebook (What's missing from Facebook Mobile). Facebook have since implemented this feature and so here are the steps to get it going: - Type in your status update in a text message, but don't include your name (Eg: "is about to watch a movie")
- Send the message to FBOOK (32665)
- You're Done! You should receive a response SMS from Facebook telling you that your status update was successful. In my example it would say "Peter is about to watch a movie"
If your phone number is not registered with Facebook, you'll receive a message to update your profile to register your number. You can just edit your profile and add your mobile number and it should all be accepted. Note that as at today, this only works for people in the US, UK and Canada and only on these networks: AT&T, Boost, Helio, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint, Verizon, Virgin USA, Bell Mobility, Fido, MTS, Rogers, SaskTel, Solo Mobile, Telus, Virgin Mobile Canada and O2. Let's hope Facebook opens this up to all countries and carriers soon. There are also other Facebook tasks you can do: |
